Right Office Etiquette : Corporate Rules For Youth

Say No To These Things While Working & Conversing With Colleague!

There is a certain etiquette that is to be followed while working and conversing with a colleague. Boundaries are set in such a way that it is best to not have them crossed while maintaining a healthy official relationship. At times though, there are those who either unwittingly or knowingly cross these boundaries that invade or threaten one’s personal space. It is safe to say ‘No’ to some of these statements listed below:

  1. Discussing any personal issues – Colleagues are not counselors, so it is always better to keep personal matters away from the professional front.

  2. Let’s meet in private – Private non-official meetings with colleagues are not advisable unless both parties mutually wish to take your relationship to another level.

  3. Your Facebook picture is cute! – Even if your colleague is good looking, it is considered manners to refrain from such comments. This can be termed as social stalking.

  4. Exchanging personal phone number – This comment is best avoided at all costs as it puts a colleague in an awkward position as they most probably are not willing to share it.

  5. Personal discussions during lunch – Lunch time is for ‘Lunch’ solely, enjoy every bite; share your food, not your personal issues.

  6. Bitching & Gossiping- This one is popular, but not appreciable. Have some sense while conversing with colleague, make it healthy rather vicious.

  7. Meetups after office timings- Meeting outside the workplace is always indicative of something personal brewing. Avoid.

  8. Picking & Dropping- Unless you are sharing the load and maintaining distance. It is better to avoid such scenarios.
