Right & Wrong Of Working, Studying, Settling Abroad- Know The Pros & Cons

Countries outside of India, the western lands in particular, have been portrayed in the minds of the youth as a haven with clean roads, less noise, strong rules and a corruption free system. This age-old image has now led to almost every Indian family having some member or relative that works or is settled abroad. Once gone, we seldom hear of those families seeking to return to their native land. This may pose the question as to whether settling abroad is actually a good option or not. As in any case, there are pros and cons to critical life decisions.

Here are some of the major ones listed below.

Pros:

  1. Financial Advantage: The major attraction for those choosing to work abroad is mostly the prospect of earning good money as opposed to what they are offered in India. The fact that some foreign governments (such as Canada) offer free benefits in healthcare and education are bonus points as well.

  2. Less Stressful Government Procedures: The western countries mainly have a reputation for being transparent and efficient in their policies and procedures. Life appears simpler.

  3. Less Traffic and Pollution: Yes! Less traffic noise and pollution can appease any human mind that seeks peace.

  4. Access to Quality Education: There is no denying that certain countries offer superior quality education. Combine them with bright Indian minds and we get geniuses!

  5. Experiencing Diverse Cultures: Diversity expands the basic understanding of human nature as a whole. This is an attractive feature for those who seek to broaden their minds.

Cons:

  1. Loss of Family Ties: This tends to happen when the distance gets in the way of any relationship.

  2. Feeling of Occasional Seclusion: No matter what, there will be an instance where we are made to feel that we do not belong. It can have some serious psychological repercussions.

  3. Increased Possibilities of Depression in Old-Age: As we age as humans, we have a longing for support from our families. If one’s families are largely in India, it may lead them to depression in old-age.

  4. Potential Loss of Cultural Identification: Cultures evolve, and that includes the Indian culture as well. A person who leaves India ten years ago will lose touch with the current Indian values and evolved traditions.

  5. No Substitute for Home: Of course, at the end of the day, we all will have a moment of longing for our childhood home and the memories it carried. There can be no substitute for that abroad.
