Republic Day 2018 : Important Things Every Youth Should Know

On January 26th, 1950 the Indian Constitution officially went into effect, acting as the final mark in establishing the country’s independence. This day is commemorated each year as Republic Day. 2018 will see India’s 69th Republic Day Celebrations.

A number of activities and events are held each year on this special day. Republic Day is akin to Independence Day in the nation’s establishment as an independent one, and there are a few important things to remember about the same.

  1. The Indian Constitution

India achieved independence from the British in 1947 but the permanent constitution only came to be signed in 1950 on January 24th. Two days later on January 26th 1950, the Constitution of India came into effect and the day came to be known as Republic Day. India was declared as “Purna Swaraj” having become free from the British.

  1. The Chief Guest

Following the Indian culture of “Athithi Devo Bhava” a foreign chief guest is invited to the celebrations each year. This year Joko Widodo, the seventh and current President of Indonesia has been invited as chief guest to the Republic Day celebrations. (Check other leaders here).

  1. PM Offers Garland

Before starting all the celebrations, the Prime Minister traditionally offers a garland at Amar Jawan Jyoti at the India Gate. This is done to commemorate the sacrifices of the soldiers of the Indian Army who have died in service for the country. The President shows his solidarity by displaying the military salute. The parade follows.

  1. The Parade

The Republic Day parade is held annually in New Delhi. Participants are military personnel and others including young children. Patriotic songs are sung by all in honor of the country’s mark of independence. Many traditional dances are performed by people.

  1. Motorcycle Ride

Armed Forces staff members partake in a special Republic Day motorcycle ride. Others parade in the area surrounding the India Gate, which symbolizes India’s independence.

  1. Indian Air Force’s “Fly Past”

At the end of the parade, Indian Air Force members engage in what is called a “fly past.” They make the tricolor of the Indian Flag in air through the planes’ smoke.

  1. National Awards

Maha Veer Chakra, Param Veer Chakra, Ashok Chakra, Veer Chakra and other bravery medals are disseminated to soldiers of the Armed Forces, brave souls, and school students alike. The Armed Forces parade in the area around the India Gate.

  1. Traditional/Cultural Programs

A number of cultural programs from different parts of the country are performed. These events are to showcase the vast heritage of India. People from all over the country come to participate and they display dances and traditions from all over.

  1. Participation Of School Children

School children are a very important part of the Republic Day celebrations. They show their creativity and perform numerous tough tasks. Many receive small gifts or sweets.

  1. Commemorating India Coming Into Its Own

Republic Day embodies the spirit of a truly free and independent India.  The national flag is proudly displayed by many to show solidarity and unity.
