Happy Navaratri 2017- Foods To Try

Navaratri brings welcome to a new set of fasts and sacrifices for foodies. The youth may be disappointed for the period the occasion lasts, but there are always tasty alternatives that can be consumed during such times of selective abstinence. It may sound surprising, but there are dishes that can tingle foodies taste bud during Navaratri! Here are a few foods to try.

  1. Sama varieties: Consumption of grains are barred during the fast but they can be substituted with Sama rice or Swaag ke Chawal. It is possible to make Kheer, dokhla, kichadi and idli with this variety. The reason? Because it is technically a seed and not a grain!

  2. Tapioca: This ingredient is perfect to make puddings, chips and even vada which tastes divine with coriander chutney!

  3. Aloo: Potatoes are widely used in a time of fasting during Navaratri and they are definitely the tastiest crop to turn to. Aloo can be made into cutlets, sabjees, and fried varieties to tingle the foodie’s taste buds.

  4. Milk Products: This is perhaps the most important as it is crucial to stay hydrated during such fasting seasons. Sugar consumption is also reduced but substitute fruits/natural sweeteners can be used to make shakes, kheer and other mild sweet varieties. Paneer is also a famous favorite during such a time. Butter milk provides adequate hydration for the body as well.

  5. Salt: Processed salt is banned from the kitchens during these fasts but rock salt can be used instead!
