The dam was conceptualized six decades ago and is on the brink of becoming a symbol of the nation’s growing prowess.

Through this blog, we want youth to know something very important about this Dam…

The prime minister said “Sardar Sarovar will become a symbol of India’s new and emerging power and propel growth in the region, the project is an engineering miracle.” Mr. Modi had dedicated the dam to the nation on his 67th birthday. “No other project in the world has faced such hurdles as the Sardar Sarovar dam on the Narmada river. But we were determined to complete the project,” Modi said at a rally.

The issues and hurdles that the Prime Minister alludes to refer to the many false allegations about the dam and the World Bank refusing to fund the project. It was the temples of Gujarat that funded the project. While asking about the tribals, who were relocated and displaced for constructing the dam, Mr. Modi asserted that they will be remembered and honored for their sacrifice to the nation’s progress.

Apart from the complex politics surrounding the dam does have some fascinating attributes. Apart from being the world’s second largest dam, the project was seen by the Supreme Court to feed as many as 20 million people and provide around 1 million jobs and supply water for 30 million industries. It was these stats that provoked the court’s decision to continue with the project despite all the controversies.

What is your opinion? Does the dam provide more benefits than negatives? Do you feel relocating an entire population of people to build the dam was worth it?
