Christmas & Hindus: Santa Bless Us All

Christmas is a holiday celebrated by people all around the world. Even though the holiday is traditionally celebrating the birth of Jesus, but with time, it has gained meaning beyond that and people from various backgrounds can be seen taking part in Christmas festivities.

Many people erect Christmas trees, decorate them with various ornaments, put up lights, stars and other decorative items around their homes. Other traditions include exchanging gifts, hosting parties and the likes.

In some parts of the world, Christmas is a time symbolizing hope, joy, and peace and people opt to volunteer to help those in need.

Note: Organizations like “Crisis” based in London allows for people to offer help to the homeless during this time.

Christians around the world celebrate Christmas by attending mass and prayer meetings on Christmas Eve. However, a lesser known fact is that non-Christians too celebrate the holiday in their own unique ways.

Many Hindus too partake in Christmas celebrations, particularly in places like India, and the United States, where Christmas is more than just a religious holiday. Many Hindus can be seen helping out in their communities and volunteering at their local charities all in the name of good Christmas spirit.

Decorating homes and exchanging gifts on Christmas are some of the traditions adopted by non-Christians in honor of Christmas.

Note: The CBC News in Canada recently carried a story about how some are going one step further, non-Christian doctors volunteered to work on Christmas to allow their Christian colleagues to take the day off.

Christmas has grown to be more than just a religious holiday. It represents peace, joy, and love amongst all.
